arlee lost much of her hearing at the age of eighteen months. That did not stop her from acting in a children's theater company at age seven; she was Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz." Her deafness never held her back. As an adult she said it so eloquently: "I have always resisted putting limitations on myself, both professionally and personally." Marlee studied criminal justice at Harper College in Palatine, Illinois, and maintained her passion for acting after graduating. While performing on stage throughout Chicago and the Midwest, Marlee attracted notice for her performance in a production of the Tony Award-winning play "Children of a Lesser God" and was cast in the movie version, Gottes vergessene Kinder (1986). Although this was her film debut, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. While shooting her next movie, Walker (1987), in Nicaragua, big-hearted Marlee took time to visit both hearing and hearing-impaired children. She continued this tradition of visiting local children throughout her travels to Germany, England, Italy, Australia, Mexico, Canada, etc.

Her interest in the criminal justice field played a part in her on screen career; she portrayed an assistant D.A. in the TV series Die Staatsanwältin und der Cop (1991), while off screen she married police officer Kevin Grandalski on August 29, 1993. The couple has four children. Marlee was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1994 for her performance as Laurie Bey in the Picket Fences: Tatort Gartenzaun (1992) episode "Dancing Bandit." Marlee is also a spokeswoman for the National Captioning Institute. In 1995, she testified at a congressional hearing and helped get a law passed that requires all TV sets 13 inches or larger to be manufactured with built-in chips to provide closed captioning on their screens; this was a godsend for deaf viewers.

Marlee serves as the national spokeswoman for the largest provider of TV closed captioning, and has spoken on behalf of CC in countries such as Australia, England, France, and Italy. She also serves on the boards of a number of charitable organizations, including Very Special Arts, the Starlight Foundation, and other charities that primarily benefit children. As someone who loves children so much, it is only fitting that she has four of her own. Professionally, Marlee has even tried producing, being the executive producer for Wenn die Wahrheit lügt (1999).

Snyder first rode a horse at 3 and began competing in rodeo barrel racing when she was 7 years old.[2] After that, she spent summer weekends barrel racing, pole bending, and breakaway roping.[3] She won the 2009 All-Around Cowgirl World Championship in the National Little Britches Rodeo Association. She was the 2009–2010 Utah State FFA President.[4]

Car crash and recovery[edit]

January 10, 2010, she was driving from Utah to the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, and didn't fasten her seat belt after a gas station stop in Rawlins, Wyoming. Less than 10 miles from the gas station, she looked down to check her map, drifted into the other lane, over-corrected, and her truck slid off the road and rolled 7 times.[5] She was thrown from the truck and slammed into a fence post, which crushed her T-12 vertebra and left her paralyzed from the waist down.[6] With the help of physical therapy, and a seat belt on her saddle, she was later able to resume riding and competing in rodeo a year and a half later.[7] She transferred from Snow College to Utah State University where she was captain of the school's National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association team.[5] She also won the Shane Drury "Nothin' But Try" scholarship in 2014.[8]

In 2015, Amberley won a fan exemption[9] to compete in RFD-TV's The American Rodeo at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas,[10][11] and made a time of 15.3 seconds with her horse Power, only 0.6 seconds slower than the winning time.[2] In 2016, she was in the top 5 for the Rocky Mountain Pro Rodeo Association, and she also won her Women's Professional Rodeo Association card in 2016,[7] and now competes in the RAM Wilderness Circuit.

Zyra Gorecki revels in the historic ‘La Brea’ role as a teen with a disability

The NBC series, which begins on Wednesday, will make the Michigan native one of the few real-life amputee series regulars and leads on broadcast television.

Zyra Gorecki understands the historical significance of her first series regular role on NBC’s “La Brea.”

“There isn’t a lot of disability representation in media, so having a character played by an amputee actor is huge,” said Gorecki, who is one of the few real-life amputee series regulars/lead actors on a broadcast TV series. “Being an amputee affects your emotional state, as well as how you react to and experience things. And being able to bring that to an amputee character is something that a fully limbed person wouldn’t necessarily be used to since they haven’t experienced it.”

“La Brea,” which premieres on WMAQ-Channel 5 at 8 p.m. Wednesday, depicts how a gigantic Los Angeles sinkhole upends a family’s lives, separating them in the process. Izzy Harris, a teen whose mother and brother fall into the pit, is played by Gorecki.

“When I originally read the script, I thought it was incredibly good. “I thought to myself, ‘Oh, this is going to be great,’” Gorecki recalled. “Also, in my opinion, not being an extra character is already a significant step forward. You’ve got all of that, plus a fantastic plotline.
